Anyone out there have any homebrew stabilizing compound formulas sitting around? The reason I ask is that I've got some experimental stuff that I need to stabilize, but can't send out to one of the...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

I've heard of using heat to make a mild vacuum before. Heating something with a very volatile solvent always worried me. It's easy to do the vacuum portion of stabilizing. I've even used a hand pump...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

I have a "bid" in on a decomissioned icemaker at work. Barring that, I have a mini-fridge that I no longer have room for. I was reading up on diluting epoxy, and the makers all say that while you can...

Speaking of glue, I've wondered if anybody tried this with cyanocrylate? I thought I heard of somebody doing it; but I can't help imagining a containment failure spraying the stuff all over the garage...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

I tried the heat thinned epoxy on some of the "slow" setting west systems epoxy, and the heat really massively sped up the hardening speed. The same resin/hardener combo that I used for the cloth...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

Update: Welded up a steel pressure chamber, and pressure after vacuum seems to have done the trick. I'm using a polystyrene/acrylic in MEK solution that's about the consistency of thick maple syrup or...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

how about an old pressure cooker for the pressure chamber? or is that not rated for pressures high enough for this?

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

Yeah, not high enough pressure. I built a pressure chamber (3/16" steel), and have been toying around with it lately. To get full saturation of my fairly thick polystyrene/acrylic solution I need to...

I ran across a tutorial on Ariel Salaverria's site where he uses a pressure chamber and polyester resin to impregnate leather to use as spacers. His pressure chamber is built out of what appears to be...

UPDATE: The straight acrylic in MEK solution worked just as well as the acrylic/polystyrene mixture. The acrylic beads came from "Michaels" (a local craft store) and were in the floral section (near...

Eric, I'm excited to make one of these eventually. But I promise to finish a couple of knives, first! If you get a chance some time, this would make a cool tutorial. Ken

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

I'm not doing the vacuum anywhere near the amount of time you're doing. As we discussed, there's problems with the solvent boiling off. With the solvent method, I think it works best to just hit the...

Have you tried substituting gasoline for the Methyl ethyl ketone?

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

Thanks, trying a much shorter vacuum with a long pressure will see how that goes.need to find proper pigment or a finer powder, thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

HH, I haven't tried substituting gas for the MEK. I went with MEK because it's a pretty aggressive solvent for plastics. I had previously tried acetone, which worked well with the polystyrene, but it...

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

Gasoline will work for disolving Polystyrene, be be aware that the resulting goo is basically NAPALM. I'd recommend NOT smoking nearby, and NOT being anywhere near your hot forge when dealing with it.

Re: Home wood stabilization question...

Napalm? Sugar and egg whites work to gel it! Oh, wait, that wasn't the subject at hand, was it? Eric, what about trying your black iron stain with the vacuum/pressure method? I bet it won't take months.
